The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the first large canyon on the Yellowstone River downstream from Yellowstone Falls in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The canyon is approximately 24 miles long and varies between 800 to 1200 feet in depth and from 1500 to 4000 feet in width. The Yellowstone River has carved its way through old rhyolitic lava flows and it has been thermally altered by the heat and gases from the Yellowstone volcano.
